A fearless couple decided to start a business in the middle of Covid! My job was to help them see if they could save money on health insurance versus their Cobra option.
Their Cobra had a $3500 deductible, a large network of doctors and hospitals, and was costing them $1400 a month. They asked me to check the marketplace/ObamaCare to see if there was a better or more affordable option.
The marketplace started at $1100 a month with a small network and over double their current deductible — $8150. Despite the decrease in benefits, they said they were still considering it, because they would save about $300 per month and they rarely went to the doctor.
If I had left it there with what they asked of me (Show us the marketplace options as an alternative), that would have been it. But I asked further, because some insurance companies offer insurance policies if you agree to let them check your health history.
They agreed to look at these policies, and wound up with a plan that cost around $650, had a $2500 deductible, and another large network. By asking questions, I improved their benefits and saved them ~$750 per month!
In one year of this, they’ll have $9000 in their pocket that they didn’t have before.
